The story behind Mahaloka

Explore the caves, hike to a 360-degree viewpoint and experience the sunset. Overnight bivouacs and cultural evenings can also be organised with the community; ask our team about possibilities.

Landscape & geology

An extension of a Middle Jurassic limestone massif, emerging from a basaltic plain at an altitude of 81 metres and covering roughly 7 km². Sharp lapiaz formations, caves, lakes and dramatic limestone concretions define the landscape.

A name with meaning

Tsingy comes from the Malagasy word meaning “to walk on tiptoes”, a nod to the sharp rocks. Mahaloka means “that which gives shade”, recalling the shelter once found beneath rock overhangs and in caves.

A landscape of refuge

The caves once served as natural hideouts and refuges for hunted local ethnic groups. Old pots, rifle remnants and other historical traces have been found here.

In local hands

Since 2005, the village association KOFAMA has managed the site, supporting community-based ecotourism, environmental conservation and cultural preservation. Local guides, cooks and cultural animators welcome visitors.
